Vietnam is amongst the top 10 Asian countries with the fastest growth rate of internet users, and therefore is a potential market for software outsourcing and IT start-up.
Vietnam has more than 33 million internet users at the end of 2013, constituting 37 percent of the nation’s total population, according to the Ministry of Information and Communications. Vietnam is also one of the top ten countries in Asia boasting the fastest growth in the number of internet users, rising to 33.1 million in 2013 from 31 million in the previous year. According to the white paper, published by the Vietnam Ministry of Information and Communications, broadband internet and 3G data service subscriptions reached 22.3 million and 17.2 million respectively.
More than 100,000 domains were registered in 2013, bringing the total figure to 266,000, with “.vn” taking the lead and recording an annual growth of 172%.
According to Gartner, a leading American information record headquartered in Connecticut, USA, Vietnam is amongst top 10 Asia-Pacific nations and a world’s top 30 in terms of program outsourcing. HCM City ranked 17th, Hanoi ranked 22th in the list of 100 cities attractive for software outsourcing. The report estimated the total revenue from Vietnam’s information technology (IT) industry reached more than US$39.5 billion in 2013, soaring 55.3% from a year earlier. The software and digital content industries posted respective growth of 12.7% and 13.9%. IT exports in 2013 brought in US$34.76 billion, up 51.7% year on year with revenues from phone shipments accounting for nearly 63%. According to the white paper, the IT industry employed more than 440,000 workers in 2013 with nearly two thirds working in the hardware sector. Vietnam’s IT industry has recognized the change in the organizational structure of the industry. The first is the establishment of the National Committee on IT application by the Prime Minister. On July 1st, 2014, the Politburo issued Resolution No. 36 to accelerate the application and development IT, meeting the requirements of sustainable development and international integration.
